The Sunrise Anomaly

Yes, Brad's 1999 First Fish was recorded at 5:34 AM, one minute earlier than Stony's official 5:35 AM record. We noticed. We reviewed the evidence. We elected to ignore it.

The tournament begins at sunrise, and several of the earliest "First Fish" entries appear to have been caught before sunrise according to historical astronomical records. Possible explanations include fast watches, slow sun, mountain horizons, loose poker table math, and a pre-2005 scoring system held together mostly by hooks, fishing line, questionable judgment, and even more questionable verification.

After further review, the official SMART record remains Stony Stoneberger, 5:35 AM, 2011, age 81. Catching the earliest First Fish at 81 carries more weight than Brad doing it while barely old enough to shave, especially since Brad had to jump in the lake to land his.

Brad keeps the honorable mention. Stony keeps the record. The sun keeps its excuses to itself.

The founding tournament. One small, skinny, ugly walleye — the only fish caught that weekend — earned all three awards by default and the title that no one else has earned since.

The unbeatable number. Even a blind angler finds a fish every once in a while, even one big enough to have its own zip code. In 2014, R.B. Barton landed a 33-inch, 240-ounce lake monster, the largest single fish in SMART history, and rode that beast to a 283-point weekend that still sits at the top of the board.

Stony's run. Every SMART from the founding to his last, 1997 to 2015. The first-place trophy carries his name.
